What Can Vision Correction Surgery Treat?

Vision correction surgery is designed to correct refractive errors, which occur when light entering the eye does not focus properly on the retina. This misalignment often results in blurred vision and a reliance on glasses or contact lenses for clear sight. Refractive errors are among the most common vision problems, affecting more than 150 million people in the U.S.1

Refractive Errors

  • Nearsightedness (Myopia): Individuals with myopia can see nearby objects clearly, but distant objects appear blurry. This condition arises when the eye is longer than usual or the cornea is too curved, causing light to focus in front of the retina.2
  • Farsightedness (Hyperopia): Those with hyperopia can see distant objects more clearly than close ones. This occurs when the eye is shorter than normal or the cornea is not curved enough, causing light to focus behind the retina.3
  • Astigmatism:Astigmatism is caused by an irregularly shaped cornea or lens, which distorts vision at all distances. The cornea’s shape resembles a football rather than a basketball, leading to improper light focus on the retina.4
  • Presbyopia: This age-related condition typically affects people over 40. The lens of the eye becomes less flexible, making it difficult to focus on close objects, such as reading material.5

LASIK

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a popular vision correction procedure that reshapes the cornea to improve the eye’s focusing ability. This quick, outpatient surgery offers rapid recovery and can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Dr. Rudd uses advanced laser technology to ensure precision and optimal results for each patient.

SMILE

SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is a minimally invasive alternative to traditional LASIK. It involves creating a small incision in the cornea and removing a tiny piece of tissue to correct refractive errors. This method offers a quicker recovery time and reduces the risk of dry eye symptoms, making it an excellent option for those with certain corneal conditions.

PRK Eye Surgery

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) is an effective alternative to LASIK for patients with thinner corneas or specific eye conditions. This procedure reshapes the surface of the cornea to correct refractive errors. While the recovery period is slightly longer than LASIK, PRK offers excellent long-term results and can significantly improve vision.

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)

RLE involves replacing the eye’s natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) to enhance focusing power and clarity. This surgery can effectively correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, making it a versatile option for those unsuitable for LASIK or other laser-based treatments.

EVO ICL™

EVO ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) is a revolutionary procedure to treat nearsightedness and astigmatism. Traditionally, the original ICL was designed for patients who were not candidates for LASIK or PRK. However, with a redesign, the EVO ICL is now used to treat myopia, even in patients who are good candidates for LASIK. This procedure involves implanting a biocompatible lens in front of the natural lens of the eye, providing clear vision without removing any corneal tissue. Thus, the treatment is reversible. There is the possibility of replacing the EVO with a new one, if one’s vision changes. Since the natural cornea is not altered by the procedure, the optics are often considered as good, or better, than those after LASIK. The EVO ICL remains the best surgical option for patients with high prescriptions or thin corneas. Dr. Rudd and his team will discuss whether EVO ICL is right for you.

FAQs

While all surgical procedures carry some risk, vision correction surgeries are among the safest and most commonly performed procedures. Choosing an experienced and qualified surgeon like Dr. Rudd can help minimize potential risks and ensure the best possible outcome.

Vision correction surgeries, including LASIK, are generally considered elective procedures by insurance companies and are not typically covered. However, some insurance plans may offer discounts or other benefits. We provide various payment and financing options to make vision correction surgery more accessible.

Learn About the Cost of LASIK

Eligibility for vision correction surgery varies by procedure, but generally, candidates should be over 18 and in good overall health. The best way to determine if you are a suitable candidate for vision correction surgery is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Rudd.

At Rudd Vision, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity for clearer vision. To help make this possible, we offer several payment and financing options designed to fit different budgets.

Most vision correction procedures result in permanent changes to the eye, offering lasting vision improvements that can reduce or eliminate the need for corrective eyewear. However, these procedures do not stop the natural aging process of the eyes. As a result, age-related vision changes, such as presbyopia and cataracts, may still occur. If your vision changes after surgery, we can recommend the appropriate treatment plan for you.
